The Orchestra

The Dartmouth High School Orchestra hails from Southeastern Massachusetts in the USA. It is made up of truly wonderful young adults who are devoted to their musical studies. Our collective goal is to have lots of fun together while learning through music. Our performances are not to be missed! Orchestra Directors Heather Church and Michael Daniels have a true passion for teaching and love working with their students.

The DHS Orchestra has performed in some of the most exquisite performance halls in our country including the Strathmore Music Center in Washington D.C. and Symphony Hall in Boston. They have hosted numerous guest artists over the years including Soon Hee Newbold, Kevin Burke, Dean Marshall and Mark Wood. The orchestra enjoys international performance tours every few years. They have performed in Ireland, Canada, Austria, Germany, Scotland and the Azores. The orchestra is honored and thrilled to explore Spain in February 2025!

The DIRECTORS

Heather Church

Orchestra Director

Heather Church holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst and a Master’s Degree with a focus in String Pedagogy from the University of Miami in Florida. She discovered her love for travel after spending her junior year abroad at Royal Holloway College in Surrey, England.

Ms. Church has earned many awards including full performance-based scholarships and teaching assistantships to fund her college education. In 2007, Heather was awarded Massachusetts American String Teacher of the Year Award along with Teacher of the Year by the South Coast Outstanding Educators Award Program. In addition to teaching, Ms. Church has pursued a diverse career performing live music with numerous symphony orchestras and rock bands including the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Van Helsing’s Curse with Dee Snider as well as performances with Josh Groban.
Ms. Church found her musical home with the Dartmouth Public Schools where she has been orchestra director for 20 years. She adores her students and encourages them to explore, appreciate and embrace all that accompanies the process of learning and performing music. Ms. Church maintains a private studio of violin and viola students and plays with her best buds in the indie-folk band, Colby James and the Ramblers.

Michael Daniels

String Specialist

Michael Daniels holds a Master’s Degree in Music Education with a concentration in Double Bass Performance from the University of Rhode Island. He is a string specialist in the Dartmouth Public Schools working with students in grades 5-12, adjunct faculty at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, is the Program Director for the Southeastern Massachusetts Youth Orchestras and has maintained a private studio of cello and bass students since 2008.

Mr. Daniels has also served as the Southeastern Massachusetts Music Educators Association (SEMMEA) Senior District Orchestra Manager multiple times and is an active member of the SEMMEA Executive Board. He has also been an adjudicator for Rhode Island and Massachusetts for various All State, District, and Solo & Ensemble music festivals. He has been an Assistant Director of the URI SMA: Strings Camp since 2009.

In addition to teaching, he also performs regularly as a freelance musician throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
