New Trier Township High School District 203 is a comprehensive four-year high school in Northfield and Winnetka, Illinois, located along the Lake Michigan shore, approximately 16 miles north of Chicago. New Trier serves Chicago’s North Shore suburban communities of Glencoe, Kenilworth, Northfield, Wilmette, Winnetka, and portions of Glenview and Northbrook, communities that reflect a tradition of support for academic and cultural achievement. Freshmen are housed on the Northfield Campus; sophomores, juniors, and seniors are housed on the Winnetka Campus. Governed by its own Board of Education, the district serves six sender public school districts (kindergarten through eighth grade), each with its own governing board. Local private and parochial schools also graduate students who advance to New Trier High School. As evidence of the New Trier motto, “to commit minds to inquiry, hearts to compassion, and lives to the service of humanity,” New Trier offers numerous opportunities for learning and involvement outside of the classroom in activities, athletics, fine and performing arts, and social service through:
The New Trier High School Choral Program currently consists of seven curricular ensembles: Northfield Chorus, an introductory mixed ensemble, High Five Choir, a mixed ensemble of all abilities, Trevian Glee Club, an advanced bass ensemble, Choraliers, an advanced treble ensemble, Varsity Voices, an intermediate mixed vocal jazz ensemble, Swing Choir, an advanced mixed vocal jazz ensemble, Choir-Opera, an advanced mixed musical theatre ensemble, and Concert Choir, an advanced mixed classical ensemble. We also offer extracurricular opportunities such as Frosh-Soph Musical, Lagniappe-Potpourri, and the Choir-Opera Musical. Additionally, we travel and perform at state and national conferences. The groups that are performing for you today rehearse in separate class periods. They will perform separately and then will combine for the mass choir set for the rest of the program.
Each choir will bring a unique sound of choral music from America. We are incredibly excited to be singing and sharing music with everyone here in Spain.
Amy Branahl is the Director of Choral Activities at New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois. There, she is an adviser, teaches Choruses, Music Director of the Frosh-Soph Musical Workshop, and the Artistic Associate for the Choir-Opera Musical. Mrs. Branahl is currently coaching for the Varsity Girls’ badmiNTon program. Mrs. Branahl graduated from the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana) with a BME(Voice/Piano) and MME(emphasis in choral conducting) degrees in Choral Music Education. She also graduated with a master’s degree from Northeastern for her Principal Licensure. Mrs. Branahl is a board member of the Illinois American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and is serving as President-Elect. She is a member of these organizations: ACDA, ILMEA, Jazz Education Network(JEN), and League of Women Voters(LVW).
An avid arranger, Mrs. Branahl started arranging music when she was a member of the Rip Chords, an a cappella group, at the University of Illinois. She founded three a cappella groups which have received many awards such as Best Arranger, Best Choreography, and Best Vocal Percussionist at the Varsity Vocals International Championship of High School (ICHSA) A cappella Semifinals and Finals in New York City. She debuted her first album “Counting Stars” and one of the tracks, “Burn” was chosen for the BOHSA (Best of High School A cappella) compilation album. She released a second album called “So Beautiful.” Mrs. Branahl has been a guest conductor at district ILMEA Junior High Festivals and a guest clinician for her alma mater District 207 and also District 211. She is honored to debut her first published choral arrangement at these festivals. She prepared and led sectionals for the IMEC Allstate Honors Chorus and also for the Regional ACDA sectionals for the headlining conductors.
Amy and her supportive husband Jared have three strong and handsome boys and reside in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago. Mrs. Branahl is active in the community and a board member for Youth Choral Theater of Chicago. When she’s not conducting or teaching, she loves to travel and show her crafting enthusiasm by documenting her knitting or crocheting while watching tennis, other sports, music artists, or shows.
