ABOUT THE Choir

Coro Austral is Sydney’s premier specialist chamber choir dedicated to Spanish and Latin American choral music, founded in 2010 by Artistic Director Margot McLaughlin. As an auditioned ensemble, the choir brings together experienced choristers to explore and perform a rich repertoire spanning the 13th to 21st centuries from Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries, alongside select works from global traditions. Committed to introducing lesser-known gems to Australian audiences, Coro Austral has earned acclaim for its innovative programming and cultural depth.

Under Margot McLaughlin’s visionary leadership, the choir has achieved notable milestones, including the first Australian performance of Martín Palmeri’s Misa Tango in April 2022 and a highly praised tour to Cuba in November/December 2017. Collaborations with esteemed organizations such as Instituto Cervantes and support from Inner West Council have further elevated their performances, blending traditional choral excellence with authentic Latin American instruments and influences.

Coro Austral rehearses weekly in Balmain and welcomes new members through auditions, offering opportunities for permanent or casual participation, cultural immersion, and international tours—such as the upcoming journey to Portugal and Spain in October 2026. The choir also hosts engaging “Come and Sing!” events, inviting enthusiasts to join in iconic works like Ariel Ramirez’s Misa Criolla and Navidad Nuestra without auditions.

With a passion for bridging cultures through song, Coro Austral continues to captivate audiences, fostering a vibrant community of music lovers in Sydney and beyond.
